ECCMID Art Gallery – Not just COVID

Following the success at ECCMID 2021& 2022, we are pleased to host the ECCMID art gallery once again in 2023! In 2021, we focused on the COVID-19 pandemic and asked our community to express what they felt during the difficult time. We received over 20 unique original art pieces, ranging from paintings and photographs to poetry and sculptures. For ECCMID 2022 we received unique and extraordinary pieces of art from almost 40 submitters.

We will also again be selecting some of the best pieces to receive prizes which include registration to ECCMID 2023 and live onsite exhibition. This page will be updated with more information closer to ECCMID.

Winners 2023

Here we showcase the top 5 art pieces from the ECCMID 2023 Art Gallery you can see their work here ahead of the full Art Gallery. Congratulations to these artists and enjoy!

1st place: "Cause of death" by Ana Pelivan, Croatia (Painting)

The fight against multiresistant pathogens is difficult, but the most devastating feeling is losing a patient because of them. Hope that in the end we will walk out as winners.

Ana has won a free registration to ECCMID 2023 as her first place prize in the ECCMID 2023 Art Gallery

2nd place: "Invincibility" by Halyna Filonenko, Ukraine (Photography)

Invincibility is the main goal of all clinical microbiologists (bacteriologists) in Ukraine, who have remained and continue to work sometimes without electricity and water supply in hospitals in different cities of our country. With the support of ESCMID, we will be able to gain new knowledge and continue to implement it in the future. Thank you to everyone who supports and helps Ukraine during this difficult time for us.

Halyna has won a free online registration to ECCMID 2023 as her second place prize in the ECCMID 2023 Art Gallery

3rd place: "Break free with vaccination" by Eleni Ioannidou, Greece (Mosaic)

I am an infectious disease specialist living and working in Rethymno, a city on the island of Crete, in Greece. During the last 4 years I have been making art using expired pills and capsules. During COVID-19 quarantine, this activity became enjoyable and worked as a calming and healing creative artistic activity that would ease all the stress and intensity from working in the front lines of the pandemic-war. This particular work is a poster promoting the vaccination in the spirit of the freedom which can be gained. The grandfather can have his grandson in his arms without fear.

Eleni has won a ticket to the Tivoli Garden in Copenhagen, Denmark as her third place prize in the ECCMID 2023 Art Gallery.

4th place: "Candida auris: Emerging into The World of Fungi" by Ilvana Çaklovica Küçükkaya, Turkey (Agar Art)

Candida auris has been portrayed as a large predatory fish, especially in intensive care units, which started to cause epidemics by insidiously growing in the world, and caused difficulties in treatment due to its antifungal resistance profile. In this agar artwork, different Candida species (Candida auris, Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis and Candida krusei) were inoculated on Chromagar Candida Plus medium, which was used for the first time in Turkey.

Ilvana has won a large ESCMID surprise gift box as her fourth place prize in the ECCMID 2023 Art Gallery

5th place: "COVID and beyond" by Katarína Rebrošová, Czech Republic (Photography)

Here presented are a series of portraits of microbiologists in action. During the COVID-19 pandemic, microbiologists like these worked tirelessly on COVID but also all of the other diseases that continued as well on top of the pandemic.

Katarína has won a small ESCMID surprise gift box for her fifth place prize in the ECCMID 2023 Art Gallery

Special AGAR ART PRIZE: "The Little Mermaid" by Selma Habibović, Serbia (Agar Art)

"The Little Mermaid" (Danish: Den lille havfrue) is one of the most famous a literary fairy tale written by the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen. There is also a statue portraying the mermaid in Copenhagen, Denmark, where the story was written and first published. It was my inspiration for agar art. I used Chromagar and bacterial isolates: Escherichia coli,  Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Candida spp.

Selma has won a full year free ESCMID membership as her prize in the ECCMID 2023 Art Gallery
